Episode 36 - There There
This time we read one of the most talked about books of the year, and one sure to be on lots of year end lists, as well as a contender for plenty of awards. Does There There by Tommy Orange stack up to the hype?
Here’s Radiohead’s There There as promised! It’s a fan video with Spanish subtitles because… looks like Radiohead is pretty stickler-y about people uploading their music videos. In the novel Dene Oxendene listens to this song on his way to pitch his Urban Indians documentary project. In this episode I say that the novel is titled for this song, which is wrong, because the title actually comes from a Gertrude Stein quote about returning to her hometown, Oakland, “There is no there there.” This quote is used in the novel and I totally forgot! Seems the title of the song may just be a coincidence, or a little bit more than a coincidence.
Either way, listen to this and imagine me at 18 years old trying to be very cool by loving Radiohead.
Next time we'll be chatting about Little Women, so brush off the copy you got for your birthday in 3rd grade and read along with us!
